Founded in 1979, IRAM’s headquarters are located in Grenoble. With a staff of more than 120 scientists, engineers, technicians and administrative personnel, IRAM maintains and develops two observatories: the 30-meter telescope located on Pico Veleta near Granada in Spain, and the NOEMA interferometer (an array of currently ten 15-meter telescopes) in the French Alps. Both instruments are prime facilities for radio astronomy and among the most powerful observatories today operating at millimetre wavelengths.

IRAM seeks a System Administrator in the Computer Group at IRAM/Granada (Permanent contract, after a probation period of 6 months). Reporting to the Head of the Computer Group, the successful candidate will support server, desktop and laptop operating systems and system software. This position is also responsible for installation, administration and monitoring of system performance and capacity to ensure high levels of availability and security of operational services.

Typical systems overseen by the Computer Group include physical and virtual servers running the Debian operating system. In addition to server-based environments, desktop and laptop systems running Debian, macOS and Windows operating systems fall under the responsibility of this position.

The incumbent will work in a team environment. Team members work together on most projects to meet goals and deadlines. However, autonomy and independent action is often required to work effectively and meet operational requirements. On-call service during the day, approximately one weekend a month is required. Work at the observatory at 3000m altitude on a as-needed basis is also required.

Required Qualifications:
Excellent communications skills; both written and verbal English
Linux server experience: 4 years
Network administration: 2 years
Virtual Environments: 2 years
Ability to work at 3000 meters

Preferred Qualifications
Ability to speak and understand Spanish or desire to learn it
Experience with Debian and/or Ubuntu operating systems
Familiarity with VMWare and NetApp
Familiarity with NIS and OpenLDAP
Familiarity with backup systems (e.g., Bacula)

Interviews will be held in English.
